Chairman and members of the Governing Council,Principal Officers and Management of the Polytechnic,Our invited Guests,Distinguished Staff and Students,Gentlemen of the Press,Ladies and gentlemen.
With deep appreciation to Almighty God, for making it possible to witness yet, another matriculation ceremony, I want to welcome all of you to this august event. The event is historic because, it is a compulsory routine academic exercise in the Polytechnic. To the new students, congratulations to you for securing admissions to this great Institution. I want to appreciate the State government, Governing Council, Management,Staff, Students and all Stakeholders for their support so far.
Historical background of the Polytechnic. It is a well known fact that Kwara State Polytechnic formally started as a College of Technology in 1973, on a temporary site that still houses the Institute of Technology, a site which now shares boundary with the College of Health Science of the University of Ilorin. It started with the School of Basic Studies, which offered Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, English, Religious Studies, Geography and History, as well as registered candidates for A Level Cambridge GCE Examinations in these subjects.
The Polytechnic initially had 110 students, 11 academic stuff and 3 senior administrative staff. The philosophy on which the institution was established includes:To combine commercial production of goods and services with training and to train a new generation of technicians and technologists, whose distinctive attributes would be self-reliance and preparedness to set their own business, either individually or in co-operative ventures. To promote and accelerate economic development of Kwara State as a component of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and ipso facto the economy of the country. To ensure adequate representation for Kwara in the Nigerian institutions of higher learning by providing cheaply and efficiently, a centre where students can be given the best pre-varsity education. To serve as a centre of educational excellence, etc.
Number of Institutes
For the sake of the new students, we have seven academic institutes i.e Institutes of Technology (IOT), Institutes of Finance and Management Studies (IFMS), Institutes of Environmental Studies (IES), Institutes of Applied Sciences (IAS), Institutes of Information and Communication Technology (IICT), Institutes of General Studies (IGS) and Centre for Continuing Education CCE).The Polytechnic as an institution with the mandate of producing middle level manpower for the economy has equally discovered that students need to be exposed to practical aspects of their course of study in order to make them job creators after graduation. It is a result of this that the Management through TETFUND provided the Entrepreneurship Development Center (EDC) with the sole aim of achieving this objective.
Also, in order to make learning more conducive for all our students, more lecture rooms have been built, furniture procured, hostel renovated and E-Library which has all the modern facilities for students and researchers. The Management wishes to assure you of the security of lives and property of the students on campus.

Matriculation and the importance of Oath Taking.
“Matriculation” within the context of this address, means the act of admitting a student formally and statutorily into an institution of higher learning for the purpose of studying; to earn an academic qualification at the end of a clearly specified and successfully completed period of study. While “Oath Taking”, is the Code of Conduct which would guide your behavior throughout your studentship in the Polytechnic.
The oath serves as a legal seal to the confirmation of your membership of the Kwara State Polytechnic and a promise on your part to be good and law-abiding citizens of Nigeria. This means that you must not be involved in any act that can damage the reputation or tarnish the good image of the Kwara State Polytechnic. You are expected to refrain from acts that are capable of disrupting the peace of the Institution. Obedience and respect to duly constituted authorities should become your watch-word. On our part as the Management of the Polytechnic, we have resolved to continue to steer the ship of the Institution in the direction of progress and development; so that the lofty ideas and ideals of the founding fathers can be realized within the shortest possible time. On this journey, it is our hope we can count on all of you.
Staff of the Polytechnic
Ladies and gentlemen, I wish at this juncture to pay glowing tribute to members of academic and non-academic staff of the Polytechnic through whose guiding hands, vision and relentless efforts of the institution has continued to make progress. The enviable and laudable roles they have continued to play in our academic and professional accomplishment are eloquent testimonies of their academic competence and intellectual soundness.
Please, once again, accept my sincere and warmest appreciation for the achievements recorded so far.
Hosting of NIPOGA .
The Polytechnic has won the hosting of the 20th edition of NIPOGA which comes up later in the year. I therefore solicit for the cooperation of both staff and students of the Polytechnic towards the success of the event.
Advice to the students.
Dear matriculating students, this address will not be complete without passing a few comments by way of encouragement and advice to you. You and I know how difficult it is to secure admission into institutions of higher learning in the country in recent years. That you are privileged to have a place here is worth celebrating and it is hoped that you will stand tall enough to face the challenges that this opportunity present to you.
You are hereby advised to be law-abiding, shun cultism, face your studies squarely, live harmoniously with other students and staff and obey the rules and regulations of the polytechnic and be good ambassadors of your various homes, local governments, states and country at large.I also want to advise you to resist temptation of becoming a nuisance to the system by getting yourselves involved in any act of indiscipline such as examination malpractices, fraud, sexual harassment of lecturers, admission and school fees fraud, truancy in class, students rampage and other forms of misconduct.
I need to inform you that failure to fulfill 75% attendance in class will mean the forfeiture of your studentship in the Polytechnic. The qualities of character which the Polytechnic expects from you include honesty, politeness, communal spirit, dedication, discipline, tolerance, perseverance,6punctuality and regularity at lectures and the fear of God. Once again, I urge you to observe, strictly, your Matriculation Oath which you would soon take and on which you will latter append your signature as a mark of commitment and legal bond.
I sincerely thank the Kwara State Government, Members of the Governing Council of the Polytechnic, Management, Security Personnel and the entire staff of the Polytechnic for giving the Management all the co-operation needed to meet set goals and objectives.
Thank you all and God bless.
