Jonathan’s Largesse Caused OAU Students’ Unrest – Investigations

More facts have emerged on why
students of Obafemi Awolowo University
(OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, were divided
and engaged in a free-for-all fight last
weekend after the visit of President
Goodluck Jonathan to the institution.
Jonathan was on campus for the South-
West Summit, where some traditional
rulers and political leaders in Yorubaland
endorsed him in his 2015 re-election bid.
Sunday Independent reliably gathered
that, after the summit, the President met
with some students of the institution,
where he addressed them and reportedly
doled out an undisclosed amount of
money for their welfare.
It was learnt that the amount of money
shared out by the aides of the President
to the students caused the fracas among
the student on Sunday, as rival groups of
students engaged themselves in fisticuffs
that left no fewer than five students
severely injured.
There had been a protest during the
President’s visit, as some students who
were sitting for examinations that day had
to trek to their examination halls, as
security operatives prevented vehicles in
and out of the campus.
The students also protested against what
they termed “decay in the education
system in the country.” They also called
the President some unprintable names
and booed him.
The leadership of the students’ union was
said to have expressed displeasure at the
manner in which the students staged the
protest thus causing a rift between
students’ union leaders and some notable
students who led the protest.
The rival student groups were soon locked
in a bloody clash, where two of them,
identified as Godson and Akuma, were
said to have supported the students’
union leaders by inflicting injuries on five
students on Sunday night.
