Worried by the rising incidence of examination malpractice across its five member countries , the West African Examination Council has decided to hold a two – day international summit to find a solution to the problem .
The Registrar of the Council , Dr . Iyi Uwadiae , made this known in a meeting with journalists in Lagos on Tuesday .
Describing examination as the most notorious challenge facing examining bodies and other educational institutions in the member countries of the council , Uwadiae noted that the malaise had assumed dangerous and criminal dimensions since the arrival of smartphones and the social media in West Africa .
As a result, he added , WAEC had made efforts to tackle the menace by introducing several measures , adopted various strategies and deployed technologies at great costs in all the five countries .
But the council’ s efforts had nearly always ended in futility due to the relentless activities of the perpetrators of the crime .
The Registrar said , “ Misguided candidates and their adult collaborators , sometimes including school authorities , teachers , parents and , most recently , operators of rogue websites , have continued to devise ingenious and sophisticated methods of cheating leading to an exponential increase in reported cases of fraud in public examinations.
“ For instance , in the May/ June 1993 WASSCE in Nigeria, the results of only 58 , 494 candidates were withheld because of examination malpractice , but by WASSCE for School Candidates , 2017 the number of candidates ’ results similarly withheld had shot up to 214 , 952. ”
Uwadiae also noted that research studies had shown that one of the ways of curbing examination irregularities is the mounting of public enlightenment campaigns to draw the attention of the stakeholders in education and the general public to the negative effects of examination malpractice on national development.
For this reason , he said , the Governing Board of WAEC had decided to approve the organisation of an international summit on examination malpractice with the themes Examination Malpractice: The Contemporary Realities and Antidotes .
The keynote address for the event , which is scheduled to hold at the Academy Inn and Multipurpose Halls, Agidingbi , Ikeja , Lagos on October 19 and 20 , will be delivered by Emeritus Prof . Pius Augustine Ike Obanya.
